Heartily thanks to our crew member DC Tandel for catching a test mule and sharing the spy shots of the next-gen Mahindra Thar 2020. The spotted Mahindra Thar 2020 new model gets the Hard Top roof from the factory itself. Mahindra will unveil the Next-gen Mahindra Thar in the auto-expo 2020 and the launch will take place in mid-2020.
Next-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 will be a completely new SUV underpinned by a new platform. This new platform is wider than the one on the outgoing Thar and makes it proportionally larger SUV. Also, the spotted test mule of Thar features Hard Top Roof which suggests that the next-gen Mahindra Thar will be available with an option of Hard Top roof variant from the factory itself. Overall the 2020 Thar new model continues to manage its retro charm on the exteriors. Round-shaped headlamps design, same boxy taillamp design, side opening spare wheel mounted tailgate, straight windshield and same old ORVMs make the 2020 Thar new model look classic as it used to be. As seen, the test mule has a higher ground clearance with wider tyres.
Interior of the next-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 will be completely revamped. It will consist of new dashboard design, more comfy seats, power windows, infotainment system and a new instrument cluster. At the rear, the 2020 Thar will continue to get the side facing seat arrangement with three fixed glasses on each side under the hard top.
Talking about the specifications, the next-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 will get BS-6 ready engine options. Mahindra is altering its current range of engines to comply with BS-6 emission norms. Mahindra is testing the XUV300, Scorpio 2020, TUV300 and 2020 Thar test mules with BS-6 ready engine. So, 2020 Thar will continue to get the BS-6 compliant 2.5-litre CRDe diesel motor producing 106PS and 247 Nm of torque. Also, a new 2.0-litre diesel motor will also be available producing 140PS of power. A 6-speed manual transmission will transfer the torque from the engine to the wheels. Also, Mahindra will offer an optional 4X4 system with low range transmission transfer case. Rumours suggest that the next-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 will get an automatic transmission as well.
In terms of safety, the next-gen Mahindra Thar will meet the BNVSAP standards. To meet these standards, the 2020 Thar new model will get an all-new chassis, dual front SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, front seatbelts reminder, overspeeding reminder and rear parking sensors as standard.
The remarkable point here in terms of safety with the 2020 Thar is the side facing seat arrangement. The side facing seat arrangement is considered as an unsafe seat arrangement by the europian NCAP. It does not offer whiplash and neck protection in case of a crash. It is unknown if the BNVSAP standard allows it or not. Also, it is unknown if the 2020 Thar will offer the roll cage or not for both soft top and hard top variants.
Price of the next-gen Mahindra Thar 2020 will start from Rs. 6.50 lakh while the top-end will cost around Rs. 10 lakh. The direct competitor to the 2020 Thar new model is Force Gurkha.
